We are
Ø Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Govt of India. The Headquarters of KVS is located at 18 Institutional Area, Saheed Jeet
Singh Marg, New Delhi 110016 [ Phone No. 011-26858570 (Board), Fax-011-26514179, email
kvssrao@nic.in the KVS administers its schemes through 18 Regional Offices, one each at Ahmedabad,
Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhuvneshvar, Chandaigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad,
Jabalpur, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna and Silchar. There are 929 Kendriya
Vidyalayas at present including three located abroad one each at Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehrain.
Each KendriyaVidyalaya has its Vidyalaya Management Committee headed by Senior officer from
Defense/ Civil services/ Educationists etc. All the Kendriya Vidyalayas are affiliated to the Central
Board of Secondary Education( CBSE).
Ø Kendriya Vidyalayas are composite co-educational Institutions, imparting education from Class I to XII.
However, some of the Kendriya Vidyalayas are functioning upto X Std.
Ø KVS has 9, 39 , 440 students on roll as on 31st July 2006 and a dedicated team of 38816 teaching and
non teaching Staff as on 1st July 2006.
Ø Admissions to Kendriya Vidyalayas are granted as per the policy guidelines approved by its Board
of Governors; as given in KVS admission guidelines.
Ø All the examinations and promotions are governed by the rules at incorporated in the Education code of
Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Ø We also collaborate with N.C. E. R.T, N.I. E. P. A, CBSE and other institutions in our Educational endeavor.
Ø We train our teachers and other Staff on the latest development in the field of education through our three
Zonal Institutes of education and training located at Gwalior, Mumbai and Mysore.
Ø We have reservations of seats in admission for SCs and STs and other categories as per the instructions of Govt. of India.
Ø We also have teacher exchange programmes with foreign countries/ organizations.
Ø For overall development of students, some KVs have sports facilities for high standard like squash court,
swimming pools etc.
Ø All the medal winners at the SGFI meet are awarded cash prize of Rs.6000/- for gold ;Rs.4000/- for silver and
Rs.2000/- for bronze.
Ø KVS also prepares students for International Math Olympiads, Jr.Nehru Science Exhibition , School Games
Federation of India, Presidents Awards for Scouts and Guide activities through competitions at various levels.
Ø All Kendriya Vidyalayas have Parent Teachers Association for Effective internal co-operation and muster
support at local level.
Ø We also undertake survey and studies to monitor our progress from time to time.
Ø No tuition fee is charger from girl students in Kendriya Vidyalayas. However, a nominal amount towards Vidyalaya
Vikas Nidhi is charge from the students. Girl child, who happens to be the only child of the parents, is exempted
from the payment of all fees including VVN.
Ø Due emphasis is laid on computer education and computer assisted education. Pupil P.C. Ratio at present is 39:1.
Ø All the Kendriya Vidyalayas have registered their teachers and students in the educational portal called
“think.com” and they use it effectively to expand their knowledge horizon.
Ø To promote integration and international understanding, we organize KVS National level Social Science
Exhibition every year.
Ø We organize Youth Parliament competitions under the guidance of Ministry of Parliamentary affairs.
Ø Every year KVS gives 50 incentives Awards to its meritorious teachers and Principals.
Ø Up to 16 Teachers including Principals of KVS are given National Award by the President of India every year.

Our Mission :
KVS has a four fold mission viz:-
1. To cater to the educational needs of children of transferable Central Government employees including
Defense and Para military personnel by providing a common programme for education.
2. To pursue excellence and set the pace in the field of school education.
3. To initiate and promote experimentation and innovation in education in collaboration with other bodies
like CBSE,NCERT etc.
4. To develop the spirit of National Integration and create a sense of “Indianness” among children.
Admission
Major intake is in Class I and admissions to higher classes are done by promotion of the children to next
higher classes. However , if seats are vacant, fresh admissions are done in higher classes also.
(1) Priority Categories:
The priorities of grating admission to different children are as follows:-
1. Children of transferable central government employees including ex.-servicemen.
2. Children of non transferable central government employees including ex-servicemen.
3. Children of transferable and non-transferable employees of Autonomous bodies /Public sector
undertaking/Institutes of higher learning of the government of India.
4. Children of transferable state government employees.
5. Children of non-transferable employees of state government.
6. Children of transferable and non-transferable employees of Autonomous bodies /Public sector
undertaking/Institutes of Higher learning of the state governments.
7. Children from any other category.
(2) Class Strength :
Each section of each class would normally have a maximum intake capacity of 40 students for the
purpose of fresh admission.
(3) Eligibility age for admission:
A child must be a 5 years old 30th September in the academic year in which admission is being sought
for admission to class I. For subsequent classes, the eligible age would be calculated accordingly. Maximum
age limit for admission is fixed as the limit plus two years. No further relaxation is permissible.
(4) Method of admission:
(A) FOR CLASS I : No admission test would be conducted for admission to class I. all applications
received would be divided into 7 categories in order of priority. If a stage is reached when the list
of one category cannot be fully accommodated children whose parents have been transferred more
number of times in the last seven years will get precedence. Cases having equal merit are decided by draw of lots.
(B)FOR CLASS SECOND AND ABOVE EXCEPT CLASS XI : Admission test is conducted and a
merit list prepared for each category. Admission is done in order of merit going by the sequence of the
categories. For admission to classes X & XII prior approval of the Assistant Commissioner of the Region
concerned is essential.
(C) FOR CLASS XI: Fresh admission would be made in the order of merit in the sequence of categories of
priority on the basis of the Board results of class X. It implies that within the same category, a students
1getting higher marks in aggregate in the concerned subject for the relevant stream will get preference. The cut
off marks for admission in two different situations would be as under:-

Provision for admission in situations wherein adequate eligible children are available
a. Science stream (1) Science with Mathematics Ø A minimum of 55% marks in Math. Ø A minimum of 55% marks in Science Ø A minimum of 60% marks in Math and Science taken together Ø A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate of all subjects.
(II) Science without Maths Science without mathematics may be allowed if the students has 60% marks in science and a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate of all subjects.
(b). Commerce Stream: A minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all subjects. Mathematics can be offered with commerce if the students has obtained a minimum of 55% of marks in Mathematics.
(C) Humanities Stream All students of Kendriya Vidyalaya if they are declared successful by the CBSE students, Humanities with Mathematics can be offered if 50% marks are obtained in the Mathematics.
NOTE: INFORMATICS PRACTICES AS AN ELECTIVE SUBJECT IS OFFERED TO ALL STREAMS. ADMISSIONS TO THIS WOULD BE GRANTED AS PER THE RANK IN THE COMBINED MERIT LIST.
*Computer Science /Multimedia and Web Technology /Bio Technology (where available) as elective is offered to students of science stream only and admission would be gained as per rank in the combined merit list. |
Provision for admission in situations wherein adequate eligible children are not available ( where registration of eligible children is less than 40)
Ø A minimum of 52% marks in Math Ø A minimum of 52% marks in Science Ø Minimum of 57% marks in Math and Science taken together Ø A minimum of 52%marks in aggregate of all subjects.
Science without maths may be allowed IF the students has 57% marks in Science and minimum of 52% marks in aggregate of all subjects.
A minimum of 47 % marks in aggregate of all subjects. Mathematics will be offered if the students has obtained a minimum of 52% of marks in Mathematics.

Reservations
(a) 15% seats for Scheduled Caste and 7.5% for Scheduled tribes would be reserved in all fresh admissions.
(b) 3% seats will be horizontally reserved for physically handicapped children – blind, orthopaedically
hearing impaired etc.
Admissions of Girl Child who is the single child of parents
a) Admission in Class – I
After admitting the candidates up to the full intake capacity as per norms, if there is any girl child who
is the single child the parents, is left out among the unsuccessful applicants, up to two such children may be
admitted over an above the sanctioned intake capacity in each female children shall be as per the category of
the parents mentioned in the Education Code.
b) Admission in classes II and above:
Single female children who happen to be single children of parents of employees coming under categories
I- VI who does not qualify for admission based on their rank in the admission test/ qualifying examination but
who obtain the minimum qualifying marks, may be admitted up to a maximum of two girls per class, over and
above the sanctioned strength. In the event of there being more than two such applicants for a class, selection
will be based on ( I ) inter se priority for different categories as given in the Education Code and (ii) relative
rank in the admission test with in the category.
Concession to students who belong to SC/ST for admission to Class XI-
Following concessions will be allowed for admission to Science and Commerce streams.
Students belonging to SC/St may be given a maximum concession of 05 marks in an individual subjects,
or a maximum concession of 05 marks spread over different subjects.

The following categories of students are exempted from paying Tuition Fee:
1. Girl students
2. Students belonging to SC/ST communities.
3. Children of KVS employees
4. Children of Officers & men of armed and paramilitary personnel killed or disabled during the hostilities
1962, 1965, 1971 and 1999 and as well as the children of defense personnel of Indian Peace Keeping
Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka and personnel of armed forces killed or disabled in “Operation Meghdoot”
in Siachin area and “Operation Vijay” in Kargil that apart exemption from payment of VVN and Computer
Fee has been granted w.e.f 1.1.2006 in favour of female children who also happen to be single children of
parents if studying in class VI or above.
5. Exemption of VVN and Computer Fund from single Girl child of parents studying in Class VI onward w.e.f 01.01.2006.
Examination & Promotion Rules
Tests & Examinations
KVS follows the system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation of students achievements in academics.
In an academics year, every KV holds following tests/examinations.
A. Unit Tests for Class VI onwards (except for classes X & XII)
Three Unit tests are conducted during an academic year. Each unit test is of 40 marks thus making a total of
120 marks for unit tests which is reduced to 20 marks as weightage of unit tests in the final result.
B. Half Yearly Examinations
This is conducted in the 3rd week of November. Its weight age in the final result is of 20 marks.
C. Session ending examinations
This is conducted in the 2nd / 3rd week of March with a common set of question papers prepared at the
Regional level. Evaluation is done at cluster level to minimize subjectivity. Its weight age in the final result is of 40 marks.
Distribution of Weightage
Final assessment of a student is based on his total achievement out of a maximum of 100 marks in
each subject distributed as under:
i) CW HW Assignment 10 marks
ii) Unit Tests 20 marks
iii) Half yearly Exams 20 marks
iv) Project / Practicals 10 marks
v) Session ending Exams 40 marks
Total 100 marks
Promotion Rules
A. For Primary Classes
i) Promotion from Class I and II is decided on the basis of continuous and comprehensive assessment made
every month of the work done in the class and assignments given to the children. No unit test, half yearly
examination and session ending examination is held for them.
ii) All students of classes I and II get promoted.
iii) If a child gets ‘E’ grade in 3 subjects or more in class III onwards, he /she can be detained in the same
class only with the consent of the parents
iv) In case the parent does not give consent, the student is promoted to the next class. However, if the student
again gets ‘E’ grade in 3 subjects or more in the next class, the Principal shall detain the child in the same class.
v) The child who gets ‘E’ grade in any 2 subjects in class V is given an opportunity to improve upon it and if he gets
‘D’ grade even in one subject, he is promoted to class VI.
vi) Promotion from class I upto class V is made on the basis of the total assessment of competencies and
skills made on a five point scale viz, A, B, C, D and E where E stands for ‘needs guidances’
For Classes VI to IX and XI
Each student should pass the continuous and comprehensive evaluation as well as the annual examination
separately with at least 33% marks. Thus, each child needs to obtain not less than 20 marks out of 60 in each subject
in the continuous and comprehensive assessment for class VI onwards and 13 marks out of 40 in annual examination,
for being promoted to the next class. To pass the examination, a student must obtain not less than 33% marks in
each of the academic subjects viz Languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies and at least 33% in the aggregate.
In classes IX and XI if a candidate secures less than 33% marks in one or two subjects in the session ending
examination, he is eligible to take the supplementary examination in those subjects. The candidate will be promoted to
the next higher class, only if he/she secures 33% marks in each of these subjects in the supplementary examination.
The supplementary examination is conducted 3 weeks after the declaration of the results.
Grace Marks for Classes VI to VIII
Grace marks shall not be more than 10 in all subjects put together restricted to maximum of 5 marks in one subject.
These would be awarded on the actual marks obtained by a student without reducing them to the weight age of 60 or 40
while bringing out the final assessment.That is to say, that these 05 marks in a subject can be awarded either in session
ending examination of 100 marks paper or in continuous comprehensive evaluation before reducing the marks to the
weight age of 60 or 40.This can either be in the session ending examination or continuous comprehensive evaluation
or split up in both. The ceiling for a subject shall remain 05 as marks.
Issue of Transfer Certificate
Issue of TC on transfer of the parent
For issue of transfer certificate, the parent should submit withdrawal form stating clearly
the details of the child and the reason for taking the T.C. After submission of withdrawal
form, the Principal issues TC in 3-7 days time. In case there is delay of more than 7
days without proper justification, the parent can approach the Assistant Commissioner
of the region concerned for redressal.
Not Automatically valid TCs
Children who have not completed one academic session in the K.V of their initial admission cannot
be issued TC as they are not automatically entitled for admission to another KV except if the parents have
been transferred to another location after the admission of the child. However, if under this situation,
TC is issued, the seal of ‘Not Automatically Valid’s is prescribed on TC which checks child’s
movement from one location to another without proper reason. For revalidation of such T.Cs Assistant
Commissioner of the region should be approached.
Change of Shift for Local Transfer
Chairman, VMC of the concerned KV is the competent authority to permit change of shift of a child.
For Local Transfer, AC of the concerned region is competent authority to decide such cases.
Grievance Redressal
KVS has a mechanism for redressal of grievances of its employees. Each region has nominated a grievance
officer in the regional office. At the KVS(HQ) Deputy Commissioner (Personnel), is the Central Grievance Officer.
Meeting Hours
On all working days Officers available in the KVS(HQ) office meet general public/staff for the redressal
of their grievances and on issues of mutual interest.
